چکیده
We present new determinations of the rest-UV luminosity functions (LFs) at z=2-9 to extremely low luminosities (>-14 mag) from a sample >2500 lensed galaxies found behind HFF clusters. For first time, we faint-end slope results samples that are fully consistent with blank-field over redshift range z=2-9, while reaching much lower than possible studies. Combining deep large allows us set tight constraints on alpha UV LFs and its evolution. find smooth flattening in -2.28+/-0.10 (z=9) -1.53+/-0.03 (z=2) cosmic time (d(alpha)/dz=-0.11+/-0.01), dark matter halo buildup. utilize these measurements evolution density rho(UV) brightward -13 mag z~9 z~2. Accounting for SFR densities faint implied by our LF results, unobscured star formation dominates z>~4, obscured dominant thereafter. ARE ULTRA-FAINT GALAXIES AT z= 6–8 RESPONSIBLE FOR COSMIC REIONIZATION? COMBINED CONSTRAINTS FROM THE HUBBLE FRONTIER FIELDS CLUSTERS AND PARALLELS
We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the Frontier Fields to accurately measure the galaxy rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity function (UV LF) in the redshift range z∼ 6–8. We combine observations in three lensing clusters, A2744, MACS 0416, and MACS 0717, and their associated parallelfields to select high-redshift dropout candidates. We use the latest lensing models to estimate the flu...
متن کاملThe Faint End of the Luminosity Function in Clusters
I review recent measurements of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function in galaxy clusters. Evidence is presented that the luminosity function of galaxies in the central parts of clusters is remarkably constant between clusters and that this luminosity function is steep at bright and faint magnitudes and shallow in-between. The curvature is highly significant – neither a power-law nor a...
متن کاملThe Redshift Distribution and Luminosity Functions of Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field
Photometric redshifts have been determined for the galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. The resulting redshift distribution shows two peaks: one at z ∼ 0.6 and one at z ∼ 2.2. Luminosity functions derived from the redshifts show strong luminosity evolution as a function of redshift. This evolution is consistent with the Babul & Rees (1992) scenario wherein massive galaxies form stars at high reds...
متن کاملThe Faint End of the Luminosity Function in the Field
I review the current observational status of the faint end of the optical luminosity function of field galaxies at low redshift. There is growing evidence for an excess number of dwarf galaxies that is not well fit by a single Schechter function. These dwarf galaxies tend to be of late morphological and spectral type, blue in colour, of low surface brightness and currently undergoing significan...
متن کاملAngular Sizes of Faint Field Disk Galaxies: Intrinsic Luminosity Evolution
In order to explain the small scale-lengths detected in the recent deep field observations performed from large ground-based telescopes and from the Hubble Space Telescope, we investigate the predictions at high redshifts for disk galaxies that formed by infall. Changes with redshift in the observed properties of field galaxies are directly related to the evolution of the disks and of the stell...
